What is Atal Pension Yojana (APY)?

On June 1, 2015, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced Atal Pension Yojana (APY) under which every citizen of India who is above 18 years of age can enroll himself for pension.

This pension is not related to the pension of disabled, old people or government employees but it is a general pension scheme which will be given to the youth of India after they attain the age of 60 years.

Whoever wants to apply for this pension will have to deposit a very small amount every month from his account with the government for pension. After the age of 60 years, the government will give you this entire amount as pension every month. Will do.

  • Applicants must be Indian. Atal Pension Yojana (APY) can be availed only by Indian citizens living in India.
  • It is mandatory to be 18 years of age to apply. Youth below 18 years of age cannot apply for Atal Pension Yojana.
  • The maximum age to apply for Atal Pension Yojana is 40 years. Citizens above 40 years of age cannot apply for pension.
  • Any person, whether he works in government or non-government sector and belongs to organized or unorganized sector, can avail the benefit of this pension.
  • All such citizens who are associated with any other government assistance cannot apply.
    • For example, if the workers working in coal mines have already applied under the Coal Mines Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1948, then they cannot apply for Atal Pension again.
    •  Similarly, if employees working in Assam tea gardens or working anywhere else are connected to any pension scheme, then they cannot apply for Atal Pension Yojana.

Benefits of APY Atal Pension Yojana

After applying for Atal Pension Yojana (APY), youth will get the following benefits:

  • After the age of 60 years, applicants will receive an amount of Rs 1000 to ₹ 5000 as pension.
  • The government will guarantee to provide a fixed amount per month to the applicants. 
  • In case of death before 60 years of age, the bank will provide the entire amount to the nominee of the applicant.
  • If the applicant wishes, he can cancel his pension at any time in between and whatever money has already been deposited for the pension will be returned to his account after 10-15 days.
  • The younger the age of the applicants, the more benefits they will get.
  • The closer the age of the applicant is to 18 years, the less will he have to pay as premium.
  • The closer the age of the applicant is to 40 years, the higher will be the premium.
